Online first aid courses

Hong Kong requires employers to provide trained first-aiders scaled to the number of persons employed under the Occupational Safety and Health Regulation (Cap. 509A, Part IV), enforced by the Labour Department (Occupational Safety and Health Branch). The statutory Occupational First Aid certificate is an approximately 30-hour course valid for three years that must be issued by an organisation approved by the Director of Labour under section 17(2) of Cap. 509A.

Hong Kong childcare rules (Child Care Services Ordinance Cap. 243 and Regulations Cap. 243A, Reg. 43, with the SWD/EDB Operation Manual for Pre-primary Institutions) require at least one employee holding a valid first aid certificate — covering child and infant CPR and choking — present on the premises at all times. Certificates are renewed every three years, and kindergartens are expected to have at least two teachers trained in first aid.

Hong Kong has no Good Samaritan legislation granting statutory protection to volunteer rescuers; the matter is governed by the common law inherited from English law. A bystander has no legal duty to rescue, but assumes a duty of reasonable care once they begin, and courts are reluctant to hold a good-faith volunteer rescuer liable.

In Hong Kong, nurses must maintain Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) points on a three-year cycle set by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (NCHK) — becoming a mandatory condition for practising-certificate renewal from the 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2029 cycle under the Nurses Registration (Amendment) Bill 2023 (at least 45 points for registered nurses, 30 for enrolled nurses), with a BLS or CPR course from an accredited provider able to count toward the total. Support-care roles such as Health Care Assistant or domestic-helper carer are expected to hold a government-recognised first-aid and CPR certificate.

In Hong Kong's residential care homes for the elderly (RCHE) and home-based elderly-care settings, employers and families commonly require carers to hold a recognised standalone first-aid certificate with CPR — such as the HKSAR-recognised Standard First Aid Certificate or the Domestic Helper First Aid course, supported by the Social Welfare Department. The certificate is in addition to elderly-care skills training and must be renewed periodically.

Foster care in Hong Kong is coordinated by the Social Welfare Department's Central Foster Care Unit with subvented agencies, where prospective foster parents undergo a detailed assessment and complete about 12 to 14 hours of basic training. Holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate covering children and infants is widely encouraged as part of a carer's preparation, not a stand-alone qualification to foster.

In Hong Kong, online first-aid theory is accepted as part of a blended model, with the mandatory hands-on CPR, AED and first-aid skills assessment completed in person with a recognized provider. The resulting workplace first-aider certificate is valid for three years.
