Adjustment of the validation period for several certifications

Since Formation RCR et Secourisme Québec® aims to become a leader in the field of online learning of CPR and first-aid manoeuvres, we must constantly develop and adapt our courses and our service.
Since our training programs are based on the scientific data we have been able to compile and on the recommendations resulting from the most recent evidence evaluations from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), we are obligated to make certain changes regarding the validation period of some of the certifications we offer.
As a result of these recommendations, it was in 2010 that the validity period of certificates for healthcare professionals went from two (2) years to one (1) year, with the exception of Quebec, where it remained at two (2) years.
Here is what could be found in the recommendations issued on November 2, 2010:
As mentioned in the latest national recommendations issued on October 20, 2020, it is stated that:
We therefore understand that certain CPR skills acquired during a CPR course for healthcare professionals can deteriorate in as little as 3 months. Since one of the healthcare professional's responsibilities is to be able to guarantee the public a high-quality care service, it is their duty to be able to be effectively prepared, in order to improve their cardiopulmonary resuscitation performance through more frequent training.
Since these recent studies have shown that more frequent training sessions as well as practice sessions carried out on a regular basis improve the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres, it is clear that in order to build a safer future, we must also apply this new standard.
In order to give healthcare professionals the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to provide very high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation care and to maximize a victim's chances of survival, we will adopt a mandatory annual recertification for all healthcare professionals.
As a result, starting June 1, 2022, our courses specific to healthcare professionals will grant a certification with a validity period of one (1) year.
This new policy will take effect on June 1, 2022 and will apply to the following two (2) courses:
This new directive is intended to comply with the most recent guidelines in order to ensure the quality of our courses.
Please note that any certification issued before June 1, 2022 will remain valid for a period of two (2) years.
However, please also note that healthcare professionals who received a certification valid for two (2) years will still be able to maintain their skills through our annual update courses. Thus, one (1) year after passing their course, these candidates will automatically receive an email invitation to take this free update. After passing this short course, the note « Updated on [completion date] » will be automatically added to their original certificate.

- The quality of rescuers' training and the frequency of renewals are critical factors in improving the effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. Ideally, renewal should not be limited to 2-year intervals. More frequent renewal of skills is necessary, with a commitment to maintaining a certification similar to the one adopted by many healthcare certification organizations. (Field et al., 2010)
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills acquired immediately after basic life support training for healthcare professionals (BLS – Basic Life Support) often show deterioration as early as 3 months, which means that many healthcare providers trained in basic life support for healthcare professionals (BLS – Basic Life Support), such as physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals, struggle to perform guideline-compliant CPR during simulated and real cardiac arrests.
